About six months back, I used to wake up to my pillow being suffocated with loose strands of hair. It was shouting for help since long. Whenever I used to brush my hair, I noticed hundreds of dry, unhealthy hair strands wrapped around my paddle brush. I could notice the receding hairline. My colleagues started questioning me too. That is when I realized something was amiss; I started looking out for a trichologist who could help me with my problem. I went through a series of tests including thyroid tests too. All my vitals seemed normal. Then, the doctor said that there could be possibility that my body was lacking in some essential nutrients that are needed for hair health.
His advice helped me re-grow the lost hair as well as restore the natural shine and luster. Although it took some time but being patient helped. I am still on the process and getting positive results.
Here’s What I Do:
1. Have more protein
The cells of hair, nails and skin are made of protein. About 85% of hair is made up of a protein called keratin. When the hair turns brittle and starts falling out without any explainable health condition, it can refer that your body is lacking in protein. With enough protein, hair remains strong and grows healthy. It is best to include animal protein like fish, lean meat, red meat, eggs and poultry in your diet. However, if you are a vegetarian, you can have green leafy vegetables, beans, lentil, pulses, tofu, nuts or cheese.
2. Include iron in diet
It is often proven that if there is a lack of iron, you might be facing hair fall with weakened hair follicles. An iron-rich diet can help you re-grow the lost hair and prevent alopecia. You might take iron supplements to add food to your diet rich in iron like sweet potatoes, lentils, green leafy vegetables, lean meat, animal liver, shellfish, seafood and nuts.
3. Add enough nutrients to your diet
Besides iron and protein, nutrients like magnesium, B complex vitamins like Vitamin B12, folic acid, biotin and essential fatty acids. Sugary drinks, soda or processed foods should be ticked off the list totally. Instead eat foods like salmon, tuna, almonds, nuts, poultry, bananas, eggs or spinach that will help your hair health.
4. Change shampoo, conditioner or hair products
Check the ingredient list of your shampoo. They may be loaded with parabens, sulfate and silicon. These harsh chemicals not just dry out your tresses but also make them brittle and promote hairfall. Also don’t subject your hair to too much chemical treatment like colouring or straightening or curling. They weaken your hair follicles leading to falling hair.
5. Try natural hair masks
Ingredients like coconut oil, olive oil, bananas, yogurt, honey, eggs are some age-old remedies used to promote hair growth and prevent unnatural hair loss. Do you also know that green tea is also good for your hair as it is for your skin and health? Whisk the yolk of an egg with strained green tea. Now apply to your hair strands and keep it on for atleast an hour. Wash off with cold water using a mild shampoo.
However, always remember that you won’t get results overnight. So have patience and notice your hair health changing for good!
