Winter is just around the corner. India is a country of diverse climatic conditions, most of the Northern parts of India start experiencing the cold winter from the very beginning of November. Winter is one of the most suitable seasons to go for family outings, celebrate festivals and have a lot of fun. But on the other hand, it also carries with itself hazardous bacteria and virus leading to a number of illnesses, the most common being cough and cold.

Start your day with porridge –
Do you know what is most difficult in winter mornings? Waking up from the warmth of our quilt! I’m sure many of you would be agreeing to me. Why not start your day with a bowl of warm oats porridge? Make it wholesome by adding some dry fruits, nuts, and seeds. You can also top it with winter fruits of your choice like apple, pear, cranberries or dates. A bowl of oats is enough to give you energy and keep you full till lunch.
Vitamin C –
Vitamin C strengthens your immune system and a strong immunity is imperative in the winter months. Our body is more vulnerable to infections and flues and having Vitamin C rich foods strengthens the immune system and ups our energy level. Sweet potatoes, tomatoes, red peppers, and citrus fruits are rich sources of Vitamin C.
Milk and dairy –
The risk of catching a cold in the winter is 80% more than in any other season. So you need to make sure that you have a strong immune system to fight off bacteria and virus. Milk and dairy products like cheese and yogurt are best to keep your immune system in the greatest of shape. You get enough nutrients like Protein, Vitamin A and Vitamin B12 to improve your immune system.
You can also give your kid a glass of warm chocolate milk topped with a few marshmallows. This will keep them warm during the winter months.
Zinc and Iron –
Both zinc and iron are essential minerals to support a healthy immune system. Stock your fridge with foods that are rich in these two minerals. Spinach, legumes, and oysters are good sources of zinc while foods like red meat, green leafy veggies and lentils give you enough source of iron. You can also consider taking iron supplements in the winter months.
Vitamin B12 –
Why Vitamin B12? It improves your immune system while keeping you energized for longer periods. Eggs, milk, cheese, salmon, and cod are rich in Vitamin B12.
Root vegetables –
Carrots, beetroot, turnip, and parsnips are common vegetables that are native to the winter season. These vegetables not just give you the necessary source of energy but also boost your immune system.
These root vegetables can be had raw or cooked. Either way, it is nutritious.
