Acne is a common problem that plagues almost 85% of the world at some point in time. There is hardly a soul that has escaped from the wrath of pesky pimples and sudden acne breakouts. They are frustrating as they come unannounced and are at most of the times very difficult to get rid of. We try anti-acne creams and ointments that can cause skin irritation and dryness, some common adverse effects.
That is the reason most of them have adopted natural remedies of acne that not only successfully gets rid of acne but also prevents any harsh after-effects on the skin.
Tea tree oil –
This medicinal oil has the potentiality to specifically fight pimple-causing skin bacteria and reduce inflammation. But as much effective as it is, it is also to be noted that tea tree oil is very strong and using it by itself can easily irritate skin and lead to redness. If you are taking one part of tea tree oil, mix it with nine parts of water to dilute the solution and use it directly in the acne.
Essential oils –
Other essential oils like cinnamon, rose, lavender and clove oil have been studied to combat acne-causing bacteria. However, any essential oil used needs to be diluted with nine parts of water before applying on the skin. The high concentration of these oils when used lead to skin irritation.
Green tea –
Green tea is rich in antioxidants and we prefer drinking it for many health benefits. But applying it directly to the pimple-affected area gives positive effects. Green tea has both flavonoids and tannins, that prevents skin inflammation and fight bacteria. A certain study has concluded that applying green tea extract to pimple-prone skin lessens sebum production and the risk of acne breakout. Boil green tea for 3-4 minutes and let the liquid cool. Spritz on your skin with a spray bottle or apply with a cotton swab. Leave it for 10 minutes or overnight. Wash clear.
Aloe Vera -
One of the primary reasons for acne is due to bacterial infection on the skin. Aloe Vera is known to fight bacteria, reduce inflammation and helps in the healing wound. This miracle plant gel also contains compounds like lupeol, salicylic acid, urea nitrogen, cinnamomic acid, phenols and sulfur that kills pimple-causing bacteria. Aloe Vera in combination with anti-acne creams and lotions have significant effects in enhancing pimple treatment.
Zinc supplements -
These supplements reduce inflammation and hence is treated as a possible pimple treatment option. Studies have shown that those with pimple-prone skin have fewer amounts of zinc in their skin compared to those with clear skin. It has been found out that taking 30-45 mg of elemental zinc per day reduces pimples by 80 – 100%.
Always consult a doctor before taking such supplements as the excess of zinc can lead to adverse physical conditions.
These are a few natural remedies to help reduce pimples. However, if they don’t work, it is better to talk to a dermatologist.
