One of my friends had a head full of curly hair that looked like ringlets. It was totally frizzy and lifeless. She had no idea what to do with her hair, neither could she straighten her hair not could she improve the texture of her hair. There are a number of women out there who might be fed up of their curly hair and would like to know how to take care of such hair type with ease. In today’s article, we’ll be talking of the tips and tricks to take care of curly hair.
Everyone has a different hair type and hair texture. Women have straight hair and then there is a group of women who are known for their curly hair and they admire those with sleek straight hair. Curly hair is not that simple to maintain because there are a number of categories, types and textures of curly hair.
Types of Curly Hair:
Wavy curls –
This is the most easily manageable as they are not prone to tangles and can be taken care of and styled easily.
Coarse wavy curls –
This hair type is very susceptible to get frizzy and is a tad difficult to manage when shampooed especially. They are thick and coarse and tend to lose their natural moisture easily.
Large loose curls –
This is a flattering curly hair type that has a definite S-shaped pattern and certain sheen to it. But using too much chemical treatment might lead to frizz and the curls losing their definition.
Springy curls –
They tend to give a super voluminous look and are tightly wound. However, the hair texture tends to dry up over time.
Corkscrew curls –
Densely packed hair, these curls tend to get super fizzy if not taken care of well.
Coily curls –
This type of curls are very challenging to manage as they generally lack definition and dry up at the drop of a needle. They are extremely fine textured and are considered the most fragile type as they lack enough cuticle layers to protect them from damage.
Tips and Tricks to Take Care of Curly Hair:
Washing hair –
You should thoroughly study the composition list when you pick a shampoo of the shelf. Since curly hair is inherently prone to dryness and frizziness, a sulfate-free, paraben-free and chemical-free shampoo will do the trick. Pick one that is rich in botanical ingredients so that the natural oil doesn’t get stripped off. Never wash your hair more than once or twice a week as it will damage your hair even more.
Moisturize hair –
Curly hair needs a lot of extra care especially a deep moisturization to restore the health of hair. Use a conditioner or hot oil treatment every time you shampoo your hair. Try a natural-at-home coconut mask for your curly hair. This is one of the best treatments that you can pamper your hair with. Mix 2-3 tablespoons of organic coconut oil with honey (change the measurement according to the length and thickness of your hair). Take some time to literally massage your scalp and every strand of your hair well. This mask is very hydrating for your hair.
Drying hair –
Rubbing your hair with a towel to dry is not what you would want to do for your curly hair. This will tangle up the hair and make it even frizzier. Gently scrunch the water off your hair with a cotton t-shirt and leave it to air-dry.
Deep-condition hair –
This is the most important step to replenish your curly hair. While you leave your hair to dry, apply some argan oil to your hair. It will act as a leave-in serum improving your hair texture. Shea butter is another good option for your curls. Use moisturizing oils like coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil and yogurt to deep condition your hair.
Go easy on styling curly hair –
Should you brush your curly hair? A big no! Buy a wide-toothed comb or finger comb your hair gently after a shower. Hairsprays, mousse, heating treatments will make your hair lifeless and are a big no if you have curly hair. Look for a stylist who specializes in curly hair treatment.
