Precautions While Having Sex After Delivering your Baby

Sex after child delivery

This is a common question among couples, “When is the right time to have sex following delivery?” Well, let’s put it this way, the right time is when you feel physically and emotionally ready to enjoy some intimate moments with your partner after delivery. Childbirth is an important phase in a woman’s life. The body goes through a lot of physical and hormonal changes and it needs time to recover. There are many women who suffer from post-partum depression and have a hard time coping up with the new changes in life. This is the time when the mother needs to take special care of herself and the baby as well. With restricted sleep, breastfeeding and other stress, women often get tired to perform such high energy activities like sex.

However you must understand that post-delivery, the body is extremely fragile and needs special care. And it is often advised by the doctors to stay away from sexual intercourse at least for two weeks after delivery because the risk of uterine infection and hemorrhage is very high. But if you have had a C-section, then you must wait a minimum of six months as the stitches take time to dry up and heal.

For quite a few months after delivery, your libido tends to stay low due to breastfeeding and change in hormone levels. The natural lubrication of the vagina decreases due to low estrogen levels and it leads to vaginal dryness and painful sex.

Precautions you must take while having sex after delivery of a baby

Talk to your doctor

Before you plan to indulge in sexual activity after childbirth, talk to your doctor. Go for a post-delivery checkup to ensure your body is fully prepared and healed to resume the physical intimacy.

Talk to your partner

This is very important as your partner needs to understand your physical and emotional turmoil after having the baby. Have a conversation with your partner without any inhibitions. Sex after baby might not happen at the first go and it is completely natural given the exhaustion, lack of sleep and the stress you are going through every day. Give it time and let the sex happen naturally.

Use contraceptives

A woman can get pregnant immediately after 3 weeks of giving birth irrespective of her breastfeeding the baby. Women also have a chance of getting pregnant even if they have not yet had their period. Speak to your doctor before you leave the hospital about birth control methods.

Special care after C-section

If you have had a C-section, be patient and give time for the incision to heal. The incision is usually 10-20 cm long and the stitches take time to heal properly. Indulging in sex within a short period after cesarean delivery increases the risk of the incision getting opened or experiencing a blood clot.

Use a lubricant

Your vagina feels like a desert after delivery due to hormonal changes and before everything comes back to normal. For a few days, you might hate having sex and cringe on the thought of even your partner getting intimate with you. It is a temporary phase and it will pass away. Vaginal dryness also happens due to the medications you are having. It is, therefore, better to use a good water-based lubricant for the ease and pleasure.

When you go for the post-delivery 6-week routine checkup, your doctor might give you the green signal to indulge in sexual activity. Take it slow and have fun!
