Squamous Cell Carcinoma is also known as epidermoid carcinomas. These cancers result from squamous cells and can form on any surface of the skin or the lining of the hollow tracts of the body like respiratory tracts and upper digestive tracts. Almost 90% of head and neck cancer (cancer of throat, mouth, nasal cavity, nasopharynx, and surrounding structures) cases arise from squamous cell carcinoma.

In today’s article, we are going to discuss squamous cell carcinoma of the throat.

For cancer that has developed in the throat, the doctor has to diagnose and identify the type of cancer to proceed forward with the treatment plan. There are two types of throat cancer: Squamous cell carcinoma and Adenocarcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma is a very common type of throat cancer that affects the flat cells lining the throat.

 

Symptoms, causes and early signs

Health experts have said that poor lifestyle like smoking and chewing tobacco, unhealthy diet and alcohol consumption are the key factors leading to this type of cancer. Studies and researches say that smokers are 25 times more likely to develop throat cancer compared to their non-smoking counterparts. Besides direct smoking, tobacco chewing, cigar smoking, and passive smoking are also other risk factors.

Some other indirect factors that can lead to Squamous cell carcinoma of the throat are an immune deficiency, occupational exposure to asbestos and perchloroethylene; radiation; dietary factors and poor oral hygiene.

Here are some common symptoms and early signs that can help to diagnose squamous cell carcinoma of the throat

  • A persistent Cough
  • A sore throat
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Ear pain
  • Hoarseness in the voice
  • Lump in the throat that does not heal
  • Weight loss

 

Diagnosis and prognosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the throat

If the disease is in its advanced stage, medical investigations may show anaemia and abnormal liver function test. If cancer gets detected early, there is a very high chance of survival and a better quality of life. The best treatment for this type of cancer is radiotherapy and surgery.

 

Very recently Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan took to social media to share with everyone that his father Rakesh Roshan, the actor and filmmaker got diagnosed with early stage of squamous cell carcinoma of the throat and is due for surgery. He also shared pictures and another post mentioning that his dad had a successful surgery. In an interview, Rakesh Roshan also hinted of Rishi Kapoor’s cancer treatment.
