Earlier days it is said by many of us that people suffering from cancer have very less time to spend with their families. Cancer the dreadful disease is known to be one of the leading cause of deaths.
But Thanks to the latest technologies which are helping in screening and treating cancer and thus improving the qualitative and quantitative life.
Today let’s first learn what is cancer and Anti-cancer diet in this blog.
What is cancer:
In simple words, cancer is known as an abnormal growth of cells which divided uncontrollably and spread to other cells and destroys them. A group of mass with such abnormal cells is known as a tumour. These cancer tumours generally surround healthy cells and don’t allow it to function normally and they’re by gradually taking out their nutrients from the tissues. Thus, a cancer cell loses all its nutrients making it weak and unhealthy.
These cancer cells grow and spread to other cells, tissues, eventually organs and organ systems through a process called metastasis.
Each cell in our body has a DNA and its genes, changes happen to this DNA and genes in cancer. These genes have a set of functions to perform and divide and grow to a number in normal healthy cells. As said any changes like change in instructions to the genes can cause a cell to function abnormally and making it cancerous.
Well this is all about cancer
It is rightly said, “Prevention is better than cure”. So, it is always good to have the right eating habits and lifestyle to protect us from the attack of dangerous cancer.
Let’s focus on what to, what not to and how to eat and stay away from cancer.
Just by selecting an anti-cancer food from groceries may not be as helpful as making the right choice of foods in our day to day diet.
Kind of foods to be avoided:
These foods are generally high in simple carbohydrates also called refined carbohydrates, they also lack many nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber. These foods easily release a simpler form of sugars into the bloodstream and thus increasing the blood glucose levels very fast. Most of the recent research has found that this spike of blood sugar is directly linked with an increased risk to certain types of cancers like breast and stomach. This is the reason why people with diabetes are easily susceptible to certain types of cancer, especially colorectal cancer. To avoid these spikes of blood glucose, it is always good to consume foods that are high in fibre such as whole grains, keeping you away from the risk of cancer.
Foods cooked for a long time with very high temperatures such as frying and barbequing, generally produce AGEs (Advanced glycation end products) which are carcinogenic. Excess consumption of these harmful compounds cause inflammation and leading to the development of cancer. Foods like animal foods and processed foods when cooked to very high temperatures generally produce these carcinogenic compounds. And on top of it, these animal foods are high on saturated fats and making us obese, which is gain a risk factor for cancer. It is always good to adopt healthy cooking methods such as boiling and steaming to avoid the risk of cancer.

Just like a single oil does not contain all the essential fatty acids needed for our body, there is no single superfood food that fights cancer. It is always good to achieve it from a holistic diet.

Most of the vegetables and fruits contain cancer-fighting compounds such as phytochemicals and antioxidants.
Vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli which belongs to cruciferous family contain a substance called sulforaphane, which reduces the size of the tumour and they’re by reducing the growth of tumours which in turn reduces the growth of cancer cells. Thus, helping in protecting other cells which are not affected by cancer.
